British Canoeing Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Course

FSRT 2

This award is all about keeping safe on your craft in sheltered water venues, this includes canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards. So, whether you are paddling with friends or your club, this practical course is packed with safe practical solutions. It doesn’t matter about your age or whether you have limited paddling experience, this course supports your knowledge and raises your awareness of your personal safety. The course is completely based around training and raising awareness, with no assessment. Structured to support you, we will ensure you have plenty of time practicing, as well as understanding how you can develop skills and experience after the course.

DURATION:

1 day  / 6 hours Training (sometimes run over 2 days depending on weather and water temperature)

PRE-REQUISITES:

Participants need to either hold the British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddle Explore Award or equivalent ability in/on their preferred craft, due to the paddling environment and the boat/board control required to complete the course.

The Paddlesport Safety and Rescue course is available to all ages. However we will
check participants’ suitability, and may require a parent or guardian to be onsite for anyone under 18.

You must be a competent swimmer and be confident on the water.

DETAILS:

This is a mainly practical training course with no assessment. Your course will support you in keeping yourself and others safe whilst on the water, providing you with the tools and concepts to consider solutions to common issues on the water.

  • Additional safety equipment

Safety frameworks

  • Sheltered water environment and weather considerations
  • Safety principles
  • Rescue protocols
  • Calling for help

Contact and Towing rescues

  • Assisting swimmers
  • Towing systems
  • Recovering equipment

Self-rescues

  • Self-rescues
  • Assisted self-rescues

Deep water rescues

  • Various craft from preferred craft
  • Techniques for getting swimmer out of the water
  • Multiple rescues
  • Unconscious / unresponsive rescues
  • Entrapped rescues

Attendance Certificates are issued to successful candidates by British Canoeing following our recommendation.
